Assignment 1 Seven basic plots

The fault in our stars does not have exactly 1 of the 7 plots, but there are 2 nearby. As first overcoming the monster, often in stories about overcoming a sample and that monster is the hurdle of the main character. Hazel is so sick that she must overcome the sample so that the cancer stops in her body and that she can live. You find very much in the story that Hazel has trouble overcoming the disease, and live with it. So it is really an obstacle in the life of Hazel because if she can’t overcome the disease she dies. The disease cancer is really the big monster is the story and it have to stop if she want to life in the future. For her love August is also the disease cancer an obstacle in his life because he also has it. Hazel and August trying to make the best of life together despite the fact that they have the disease. Hazel goes many times to the hospital to ensure that the cancer goes away.

Assignment 2 Characterization

Hazel Grace Lancaster

One of the maincharacters of this book is Hazel. She is 16 years old. She is sick, she has cancer. That's the reason why she spends a lot of time in the hospital. Hazel is not very social and she is quite shy. That is the reason why she hasn’t got a lot of friends. She is not really scared to die but she knows it can happen any time. So she tries to enjoy life as long as it’s possible. Hazel is a very sweet, shy girl and she won’t harm nobody. A day she met Augustus and she falls in love with him. Since she met August, she changes a lot in her behavior. That's why I would call her a round character. The change takes place at the moment she meets Augustus. At that moment she becomes less shy and she wants to live life to the full. Before she met Augustus, she didn’t really live life and was quite shy. Hazel also is dynamic character because she is a complicated character and you know a lot about her. She also charges in the course of the story, that’s why she is a dynamic character.

August Waters

August is an 18 years old boy. He had cancer but he is cured. When he was sick, he lost his leg. So he has a prosthesis. He is in love with Hazel. Isaac is his best friend. He is a protagonist in the story because without him, there is no story. His decisions are important and can have big consequences. He is a flat person because his character doesn't change much through the story. Hazel does change very much as soon as she met August but August didn't really change. I would call August a static person because the teller of the story doesn't really zoom in on his thoughts but more on Hazel's. And as I said before, his character doesn't change much in the story.

Isaac

Isaac is August's best friend. He isn't very important for the story but he is present. Isaac is an antagonist because he hasn't got a big role.

Assignment 3 Setting
This story is in different places. Hazel is often in the hospital for her chemo’s and for conversations about her cancer. She is also often in her own home. In the beginning of the book, she sleeps at home every day. But when it later went worse, she stays in the hospital. Hazel is always very happy to be in her own house with her parents because they mean much for her. She also has a friend August and she is sometimes in his room if they are together. She was one time in Amsterdam with her mother and August to meet her favorite writer, you can read that in quote: “Some tourists think Amsterdam is a city of sin, but in truth it is a city of freedom. And in freedom, most people find sin.” It’s a true story where later a book and film are made of, so it’s a few years ago. The time of the book is the same as we have now.

Assignment 4 Point of view

The book is written in the "I" perspective and Hazel is the teller of the story. You see the world through her eyes. In this beautiful quote from page 153 you recognize the I-perspective:

“I’m in love with you, and I know that love is just a shout into the void, and that oblivion is inevitable, and that we’re all doomed and that there will come a day when all our labor has been returned to dust, and I know the sun will swallow the only earth we’ll ever have, and I am in love with you.”

In this quote you can also see that it's Hazel who is telling the story:

“Some infinities are bigger than other infinities. A writer we used to like taught us that. There are days, many of them, when I resent the size of my unbounded set. I want more numbers than I’m likely to get, and God, I want more numbers for Augustus Waters than he got. But, Gus, my love, I cannot tell you how thankful I am for our little infinity. I wouldn’t trade it for the world. You gave me a forever within the numbered days, and I’m grateful.”

Assignment 5 Theme

The book 'the fault in our stars' has different themes. The main theme is love because it really is a love book. The love between Hazel and August is so strong that you can really read that in the book. Hazel has cancer but he stays with her and supports her even though August knows that she might die. Another theme is the cancer, the whole story is about the disease cancer because that is the obstacle for them both. Hazel gets the first time the cancer and August gets it later for the second time. It’s also about friendship because Hazel and August both are friends with Isaac. They have met Isaac on a course and now they are a lot together. In the end, death is also a theme because August cannot survive cancer.
